Nicolae!

With great sadness Raţiu Family announces the passing of Elisabeth Pilkington Raţiu, wife of Ion Rațiu
During the last Romanian presidential elections in November 2014, Elisabeth Raţiu’s eyes were filled with tears at the sight of Romanians standing in line to vote in London. ‘How much it would have pleased Ion!’ she said then to her son Nicolae, who accompanied her. Touched by the love that her husband had for Romania, Elisabeth Pilkington Raţiu always was a great supporter of the democratisation processes taking place in Romania.
Elisabeth Pilkington Raţiu was born in the Pilkington family in 1921, in the north of England. She met Ion Raţiu as a young LSE student whose classes had been moved to Cambridge because of the war. Ion and Elisabeth married in 1945 and had two sons, Indrei and Nicolae. During 55 years of marriage, Elisabeth immersed herself in the life, culture and customs of the Romanian people. In between raising Indrei and Nicolae, doing charity work and working in the sales department of Harrods, as well as mixing entrepreneurship and cookery, Elisabeth had also found the time to support Ion Raţiu in his efforts to bring the Romanian exile together in a cohesive community and an organisation that could oppose the communist dictatorship. Elisabeth was the co-founder of the Raţiu Family Foundation (in 1979), together with Ion Raţiu. She was also a Trustee and Member of the Raţiu Family Foundation’s Board.
Throughout the years, Ratiu Family Foundation has been our main funder, fully supporting the programmes and events run by the Romanian Cultural Centre in London.
In accordance with her wishes, Elisabeth Pilkington Raţiu will be cremated in London in the presence her immediate family members, followed by a memorial service at St James’s Church, Piccadilly, London in November.
May she rest in peace!
